Businesses: how do you put your Corporate Responsibility (CR) strategy into action?

Corporate Responsibility is becoming a standard feature of many organisations’ strategies, as it brings so many benefits: it enhances their reputation, acts as another way to attract socially-conscious customers, and helps you to comply with the UK Companies Act 2006, which encourages directors to consider wider social and environmental impacts.

Putting it in your strategy is important – but finding ways to put CR into practice, and take a leading role in giving back to your community, can sometimes be more difficult. But here at Embrace, we are all about fresh ideas and making things easier! So here’s a host of ways you as a business can support a wonderful charity, just like ourselves, with your CR activities – plus more about the benefits it can bring you, and the very real difference you’ll be making to the charity as well.

What is Corporate Responsibility?

Corporate Responsibility (sometimes called Corporate Social Responsibility) is a business approach that shows a company is taking responsibility for their impact on society, the environment, the economy, and looking beyond just making profits. It’s a way of demonstrating that you’re part of a wider ecosystem, and that you’re willing to play a part in supporting that.

CR can look different for every business, but essentially it’s a way to make a real and positive impact in your community while also benefiting your own organisation: building a positive company culture, adding another dimension to your brand, and a way for your employees to get involved in something truly rewarding.

If you're looking for ways to support a charity with your CR, here are some fantastic options for supporting Embrace that make a real difference.

1. Donate a Percentage of Your Sales or Profits

One of the simplest and most impactful ways to support a charity is by donating a percentage of your sales or profits. You can set a time limit that works for you—perhaps a month, a season, or link it to a special event. Not only does this provide financial support for the charity, but it also allows your customers to feel that they are part of the good you’re doing. Many people are more likely to purchase from businesses that give back, so this could even help boost your sales in the process!

2. Volunteer a Specialist Skill or Knowledge

Sometimes, the most valuable thing you can offer isn’t money: it’s the skills and expertise you have in-house. Charities often need professional skills to keep things running smoothly, from IT support to marketing, legal advice, or even electrical sign-offs on items. If your team has specialist knowledge, consider offering pro-bono services. This allows your employees to use their skills in a meaningful way while supporting a great cause.

3. Make In-Kind Donations

Not all donations have to be cash. Charities often require supplies to carry out their work effectively. Could you donate craft materials for our groups and activities, office stationery, or even prizes for a raffle or auction? These donations reduce costs for the charity and allow us to focus resources where they are needed most. If your business has excess stock or unused materials, why not put them to good use?

4. Organise a Fundraising Event

Getting your team involved in fundraising is a fantastic way to support a charity while also fostering teamwork and boosting morale. Whether it’s a cake sale, a raffle, a company-wide challenge, or a themed office day, fundraising events bring people together for a common cause. We have our Dress 2 Express Day on 24th October, and we’d love local businesses to take part. Could your team dress up and donate? A fun activity like this can make a big impact, and it’s great for your socials as well!

5. Sponsor a Project or Items

Sponsorship is a brilliant way for businesses to contribute in a tangible way. Whether it’s funding a fundraising event, supplying new staff uniform, or sponsoring a specific project, your support can make a huge difference. In return, sponsorship can provide valuable exposure for your brand in places that you may not have reached before, and it also shows your customers that you care about giving back.

6. Support an Event

Many charities host events and need volunteers, financial support, or prize donations to make them a success. Could your business contribute by offering staff to help on the day, providing financial backing, or donating a raffle prize? Whether you’re offering time, money, or resources, every little helps to create a successful event that raises vital funds.

7. Set Up Regular Donations

Regular financial donations from businesses provide charities with stability and the ability to plan for the future. Even small monthly contributions can add up to something significant. To go a step further, you could introduce Payroll Giving, allowing employees to make small, tax-free donations directly from their wages. It’s an easy, hassle-free way for your team to support a good cause with the Gift Aid and tax relief all taken care of.

8. Offer Business Resources

Could your business offer physical space or storage? Many charities struggle with finding affordable meeting rooms, office space, or storage for donated items. If you have facilities that aren’t being fully used, consider offering them to a charity free of charge. It’s a simple but incredibly impactful way to help.
