We’re having a big birthday this year – and a platinum party to celebrate! 
 
It’s only a few weeks away, and there are only a few tickets left! The Embrace 70th Birthday Platinum Ball is all set for Saturday 26 October, and we couldn’t be more excited. Here’s what to expect on the night, how to get your tickets, and how to snap up one of our sponsorship slots… 
Every summer, our ‘Skool’s Out’ playschemes run for three weeks during the holidays for children and young people between 8 and 17 years old, at Ridgeway School in Kempston. With loads of fun activities on and offsite, there are all sorts of opportunities to experience – there’s nothing that we won’t try, and this year has been no different! 
 
Here’s a rundown of some of the brilliant activities that our young people and their families have enjoyed over the holidays - and how we’ve been ‘Embracing’ the summer at Skool’s Out. 
2024 is a very special year for us: our charity is turning 70 years old! We’ve got so much to celebrate about our achievements since we were founded in 1954 – including how much we’ve evolved. Our name isn’t the only thing that has changed…

So…Who WERE We? 
 
In 1954 a small group led by Alderman Richard Turner started the charity, known then as “Bedford and District Spastic Society” (a name of the times – and not one that’s in use today!). In just four years they opened Drayton House on Bromham Road in Bedford: a treatment centre for people with cerebral palsy. It provided a nursery, speech therapy, physiotherapy and advice to parents and carers as well as a small workshop for adults who made toys for a local company each afternoon. 
Cream first or jam? We'll leave that up to you to discuss, but June is of course Cream Tea Month and for our 70th birthday, we are hosting a special vintage cream tea event on Saturday 15th June at Cardington Village Hall. Go on - treat yourself...
