Celebrating a Year of the Embrace Toy Library
Posted on 17th December 2024 at 15:51
We can’t believe it, but the Embrace Toy Library celebrated its one-year anniversary in December!
We know the Toy Library is a unique, invaluable resource for families in our community, and we’re so proud of it – so this month, we’re celebrating this wonderful facility and how it means so much to the families who belong to it…
About the Embrace Toy Library
The Toy Library was originally created as North Bedfordshire Toy Library. When it could no longer be run by its founders, it was generously gifted to us in December 2023. It’s now run on behalf of Embrace by the amazing Brittney, who volunteers her time and energy – and we’re proud to say that it continues to be a huge support in the lives of many families.
In exchange for membership of £1 per month, families can choose from a wide range of high-quality toys, games, and sensory items that are available for loan – up to five per family per month. Whether it’s a puzzle, a fidget toy, or a sensory playset, these resources offer not just entertainment, but also crucial developmental support for children with SEN.
We know that raising children with SEN can come with unique challenges, and having the right tools can make a world of difference. Buying these specialised toys can often be expensive, and finding the right ones for your child can be tricky. That’s where the Toy Library comes in – families can access to these toy resources without the financial burden. It gives the children in our community access to new ways of playing and discovering the world, that they might not be able to enjoy without it.
One parent shared this lovely feedback:
"I want to say thank you so much for the Toy Library. It is a fantastic resource and such a rare one these days! You're such an important and supportive role in the SEN community, I hope it continues to grow in strength!"
These lovely words highlight exactly why we wanted to continue the legacy of this important resource – to keep providing a service that supports our families, and helps their children thrive.
Introducing ‘Toy of the Month’
Borrowing from the Toy Library also allows families to experiment with different toys to see what works best for their child. From sensory toys that help with calming and focus to interactive games that encourage social skills, there’s something for everyone – and this January, we’re excited to launch our new ‘Toy of the Month’ initiative!
Each month, we’ll spotlight a popular toy from the library, sharing tips on how to use it for play and learning. This is a great way for families to discover new favourites and see how different toys can support their child’s development.
Stay tuned to our website and social media channels for updates on the Toy of the Month – we can’t wait to share our top picks with you!
Join the Toy Library
The Toy Library wouldn’t be what it is today without the dedication of Brittney and the generosity of the community. Every donation and act of support helps us continue to provide this vital resource for families in Bedford and beyond. As we celebrate this milestone, we’re also looking to the future, with plans to grow the Toy Library and reach even more families. If you have any toys to pass on that your child no longer needs, or if you would like to make a direction funding donation, we’d love to hear from you!
And if you haven’t joined already, why not come and visit us? Whether you’re looking for something specific or simply want to see what’s available, Brittney will be there to welcome you with a smile and expert advice. You’ll need to sign up and become a member (just £1 per month, or £12 for a year’s subscription) – and you can do this online before you visit, or at the library with Brittney to help you.
The Toy Library is open on Fridays from 11-12 in term time only, at the Child Development Centre in Kempston. You can register, buy membership, and find and request toys on the website: Embrace Toy Library page
Here’s to another year of supporting families, spreading joy, and making playtime accessible to all!
